Tucked along the Eel River in the heart of Humboldt County, Fortuna is the kind of small town that surprises visitors with how much there is to see and do. From redwood trails right in town to scenic drives, local history and lively summer festivals, here are the best things to do in Fortuna, CA, and why Comfort Inn & Suites Redwood Country makes the perfect starting point.

1. Walk the River Walk Along the Eel River

Just down Riverwalk Drive from the hotel, the River Walk is a roughly two-mile trail beside the Eel River that starts at the River Lodge Conference Center. Enjoy wide views of farmland, river bars and distant mountains. It is ideal for a sunrise stroll, an evening jog or bird watching.

2. Explore Rohner Park's Redwood Trails

Rohner Park is a 50-acre park in the heart of Fortuna with miles of walking trails through second-growth redwoods. It is also home to the Fortuna Rodeo grounds and plenty of picnic space, making it a favorite with families.

3. Step Back in Time at the Fortuna Depot Museum

Housed in an original 1893 railway depot near the entrance to Rohner Park, the Fortuna Depot Museum shares the history of the Eel River Valley through railroad, farming and logging artifacts, Native American baskets and a hands-on Children's Touch Corner.

4. Drive the Avenue of the Giants

About 15 miles south of Fortuna, the 31-mile Avenue of the Giants winds through Humboldt Redwoods State Park beneath some of the tallest trees on Earth. Don't miss the easy half-mile loop at Founders Grove. Read our Avenue of the Giants guide for more.

5. Fish the Eel River

The Eel River is known for its seasonal runs of salmon and steelhead, and anglers come from across the West to try their luck. Check current California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations and seasons before you cast, and ask locally about the hot spots.

6. Hike Headwaters Forest Reserve

Just outside town near Hydesville, the southern entrance to the 7,472-acre Headwaters Forest Reserve offers guided hikes on the Salmon Pass Trail through old- and second-growth redwoods (seasonal, by guided tour). Check with the Bureau of Land Management for current tour availability.

7. Visit Victorian Ferndale and Humboldt Bay

Fortuna is a short drive from the beautifully preserved Victorian village of Ferndale, as well as Eureka and Humboldt Bay, where you can enjoy waterfront dining, harbor cruises and historic architecture.

8. Time Your Trip for a Local Festival

Summer is festival season in Fortuna. The Fortuna Rodeo, held each July at Rohner Park, has been a community tradition for more than a century, and the Fortuna Redwood AutoXpo brings classic cars, a Main Street cruise and family fun each summer. Plan ahead with our Fortuna events and festivals guide.
